Whether you are a writer or only a reader, I highly recommend reading this book.

A view, not into her process, but into her mind and her reasons for writing, The Wave in the Mind is delightful, provocative, interesting, and in the end, essential reading. In particular, I would have everyone who reads, tackle her essay, "The Question I get asked the most".

Global approaches to health began to be conceived as rich nations embarked on the exploration and colonization of poor nations in the tropics. For much of the first half of the 20th century, these approaches were focused on gaining an understanding of the pathophysiology of infectious diseases endemic to warmer climates and devising the means to cure them. In the latter half of the 20th century, the use of airplanes increased international travel, allowing the import and export of various infectious agents with increasing ease. Other factors contributing to the spread of disease were the mass migrations caused by war, civil strife, hunger, and natural disasters. Such migration has influenced the changing face of global health. The past century also witnessed the industrialization of previously nonindustrial countries and the globalization of trade. In some regions, these trends have led to economic improvement, the control of many infectious diseases, and a shift toward a focus on chronic diseases. But these epidemiologic transitions have also drastically affected some countries by requiring less sophisticated societies to face modern health challenges. Global health today has a much different face from the one it had in 1902, when Sir Ronald Ross won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work linking malaria and mosquitoes. Today, the field of global health encompasses infectious and chronic diseases, environmental and occupational health, injury prevention, war, and hunger, as well as research and the implementation of health care programs. And it involves politics. In order to achieve success in combatting poor health, the international community has come to appreciate the need for partnerships, both among countries and international organizations and between public agencies and private industry. In Critical Issues in Global Health, Koop, Pearson, and Schwarz have assembled contributions by prestigious leaders in the area of public health who here share their insights into what they see as the most pressing issues in global health. The editors have grouped the essays into three main parts, covering countries, continents, and the world; organizational landscapes in global health; and organizations, management, leadership, and partnerships. The relatively short chapters address past successes, current challenges, and possible future advances in public health. The first essay, by Gro Harlem Bruntland, the former director general of the World Health Organization, establishes the tenor of the book. Bruntland points to the tremendous gains in life expectancy that were made over the past few decades; however, she also points out that severe poverty hinders more than a billion people from reaping the rewards of the "health revolution." Bruntland lists four challenges for the 21st century: "first and foremost," a reduction in poverty; second, the need to address threats that arise from economic crises, unhealthful environments, and risky behavior; third, the development of effective health care systems; and, fourth, the expansion of the knowledge base related to health. Throughout subsequent chapters, after discussing experiences with various topics in health care, the contributors delve into areas that, in essence, revisit these four challenges. Critical Issues in Global Health is an excellent overview for those with an interest in improving global health. It is expansive in its coverage, which is both a strength and a weakness. Although the book provides an overview of many important topics in global health, each chapter is only that, an overview. Readers will use the book as an introduction to the subject of global health, but they will need to search for other works that provide more coverage in depth. The pressing health issues of today are covered, but the challenge is to predict what influences -- the severe acute respiratory syndrome is a recent example -- will affect the world's health in the future. It is written an aggressive tone but it does provide excellent discussions and reference to the development of Islam .There is a vast amount of research done with hundreds of footnotes given so you can always go back and check where his information is coming from.

This book explains the C# language and object oriented programming very well, in a lighthearted, even humorous, manner. I am an experienced programmer but unfamiliar with the newer object oriented style of program design (yeah, I'm old), and I found this very helpful. It does not take a hands-on approach, which is a drawback for actually becoming proficient, but an advantage for learning the theory and concepts. In addition to specifics regarding the C# language, he offers good advice concerning recommended practices of a professional programmer.There are some formatting issues which can be annoying. Extra spaces occur randomly in the middle of words, and occasionally a space is missing between words.

This is an AWESOME teaching manual! It's very interactive by giving phenomenal examples for each new concept. It doesn't rush through the process of learning (basically) an entirely new language. The author, Rob Miles, is also very witty in his dialect.My husband is currently in school for Game Design and I wanted to be able to follow along with what he was trying to tell me. Not only did this book teach me to keep up with my husband's programming talks, but now I'm actually able to help him with his homework!

Start with this book if you aren't an experienced programmer and want to learn C# programming. Even if you are an experienced programmer and want to learn C# start with this book!!! The text explains a lot of programming details that you will learn from experience, but the little things a novice wouldn't know are explained here. Like what is a compiler? What do you do with the compiler? It also explains the why's and how's of programming. There's GOLD in those purple highlights! Rob uses colors to make the programming code stand out. I was working my way through Beginning C# 6 Programming with Visual Studio 2015 by Benjamin Perkins when about half way through I went into information overload and realized I needed to get some more basics down in my head before I proceeded. So I spent a buck and got this book. This book is just about the C# language and does not go into how to run Visual Studio, but the author's approach to introducing the C# language is the best I've read yet.Now I'm mentally loaded up with new understanding and ready to go back to learning more of Visual Studio 2015. Thanks to Rob Miles.

I look forward to reading this however the ebook version, which is the only one for sale, has not been updated. I believe it's at least two "versions" older than the more recent ones available on his website for the generous price of free (in .pdf format only). Maybe someday it will be updated?

Wow! Rob Miles did it again. What a great read. I'm just getting started in the world of coding and because of Rob I have found my favorite programming language. C# is powerful and its easy to learn thanks books like Robs. I love the way Rob writes his books. Not only are they full of knowledge but they are fun to read. For me, as I'm reading, typing in his examples and then running the code. I have so much fun it's almost like Rob is there sitting next to me. He encourages me to tweak his examples and try my own ideas. Thank you for another great book Rob!

This is NOT your typical programmers book. If you want a quick intro to C# but in a stand up comedian kind of way that makes it not only easy to read, but easy to comprehend - then you gotta grab this little gem.I read it once for the programming tips, and again JUST for the humor. In fact this is the ONLY book in my vast collection that I actually took a quote from for a presentation. Love it.

This book really breaks it down for you. If you are learning C# or learning a programming language for the first time then you want this book.If you are already a programmer then this is a good reference and an entertainment. It is also an entertainment for the learner.I say an entertainment because the author says some very funny things here and there within the book. I think what this would do for a person new to programming would be to take away the fright that programming is complicated thing which in fact it is not. It makes you look at programming from a different perspective.One thing that this author does is that there is an updated version to this book every year or two as I have seen so far.

As a professional graphic designer, I am always interested in symbols and other forms of visual communication when they are presented in a well designed format and exhibit an underlying understanding of the timeless principles of design. This small sized book takes a good approach to the display of many relevant marks, that for the most part are well conceived and intelligent, as opposed to trendy or transient. Unfortunately the book's publisher committed a fatal flaw by repeating some signatures in the middle of the book which left me disappointed in the quality and design oversight of the book's publication. A sloppy publication raises questions about the integrity of the contents. Nevertheless, if you can get past the flaw, I would recommend the book for those seeking design inspiration and prompts to creative approaches in the creation of marks.

It does have some good symbols in it but also many complicated graphics. If you already own the large and well-known Logo book then this one is more like an abridged and bag-sized version. Its great at the price (buy it used) but not as strong of a selection as the competitor. I really just wanted a book of symbols from throughout history and cultures to give me inspiration for logo designs, not the completed products.

As reviewed in the WSJ, this is a very welcome addition to the field of logo design. One can quibble that some of the leading French, German and Swiss designers are not covered in greater detail - book seems very UK centric especially in the color spreads for the Underground, BOAC, etc.The manufacture of the book is not so great (printed in China of course - whatever happened to the printing presses of the Western world?), binding fell apart 6 days outside the Amazon return date - not cheap and poorly assembled. Check your copy carefully if you decide to buy this.

Exactly what I was looking for, with ample references taken from around the world and divided into categories, and printed on heavy paper. Beautiful for idea stimulation. The only thing i would change would be to make the book physically taller and wider so it could be opened and examined without having to physically hold it open.

A collection of Symbols. Very nicely done. Heavy paper. Feels good to hold it in hands. :)

Mike Meyers material is great but it would have been easier to see if the book had color pages instead of all black and white.

Everything I expect from Mike Meyers certification preparation material. I have this and the All in One book as well. I really like the format of this particular book. The travel theme with the notes, local lingo and exam tips are really helpful. Overall it's written in a way that is a little less technical and a little easier to comprehend while gaining the same knowledge. Of course I use both to prepare for my exams because I want to feel more than ready when I sit for the exam but I haven't failed any exams while using any of the Mike Meyers products.
