Historian Joseph W. Bendersky bases most of his arguments on documents from Military Intelligence Division (MID) files that "identified a myriad of [Jewish] institutions and individuals that could be drawn upon and formed into various malleable combinations when necessary." The MID, says Bendersky, used these files to build conspiracy theories positing Jewish plans for world domination. Between 1918 and 1941, hundreds of officers contributed thousands of entries to the MID subject files indexed under the heading "Jews: Race." Bendersky's readings of these documents allege that the Army's campaign against Jewish immigration to the United States in the 1920s was motivated by racism, and that racism in the Army's highest ranks helps to explain America's slowness in responding to the Holocaust. Bendersky, author of History of Nazi Germany (1985), spent 10 years researching this important history of anti-Semitism in the U.S. Army. He offers evidence that vicious anti-Semitism permeated the highest ranks of the U.S. Army from the turn of the century through the 1970s. He found that the Army's Military Intelligence Division (NM) created a separate classification for Jews to accommodate pertinent reports, memoranda, and correspondence. Bendersky also discovered letters between officers, secret agents, state secretaries, and embassies abroad, in which information on Jews was exchanged, including lists of prominent Jews who supposedly dominated or influenced German banking, industry, and politics. These Jewish files, Bendersky shows, reveal that an anti-Semitic worldview persisted in the army officer corps throughout World War II. Although the presence of anti-Semitism in the army has never been a secret, Bendersky's documented study reveals for the first time the extent of this insidious policy of Judeophobia. Combining Brian Solomon's excellent GE and EMD reference works into one softcover title, railroad enthusiasts can have an outstanding history of both of the major remaining North American locomotive manufacturers (in fact, the world). Combining solid historical research, insight from the research, beautiful archival and current photographs, this combined volume is a must have for both the casual enthusiast and the serious railroad historian.As is the nature of the ever-changing locomotive manufacture industry, there are recent changes to the field which are not covered in this volume. These include recently developed and released Tier-4 emissions standard compliant locomotives from both manufacturers, as well as extensive recycling and rebuilding activities on the EMD side (likewise, the impact of EMD's purchase by ProgressRail/Caterpillar from General Motors is ripe for additions in future editions of this book). I hope that Solomon can revisit and update these volumes to reflect recent changes in these areas.Likewise, there is room to consider the extensive reuse and remanufacturing trend among the Class-1 railroads (especially Norfolk Southern's extensive rebuilding programs of motive power from the last 20 years, such as the SD9043 to SD70ACu and the "Dash-8.5" and DC-to-AC programs).It's written at a level that it entertaining for fans and deeply researched enough to serve as a proper educational reference. But the photography alone is well worth the price.

Just what one would expect from Brian Solomon. My library is bursting with Mr.Solomon's works and, no doubt, will finally succumb as this prolific writer continues to enhance the subject matter he knows so well. I had the opportunity to operate many, many of the locomotives described in the book, and viewing the magnificent pictures was enough to bring back the smell of diesel fuel, creosote and warm brake shoes. Anyone interested in railroading cannot do better than Brian Solomon. On a personal note, the General Electric U28B was hard to beat...even from the cab of a Rock Island unit!

This book was generally informative, but too many of the photos were "artistic" with nice effects such as sunsets but locomotives with darkened profiles so that details were invisible. I would have preferred photos that displayed the details of the different locomotives. Almost a third of the text was repetitive listing of horsepower, tractive forces, and other specifications of locomotives that could better have been represented in tables that would be easy to look up, take little space, and leave more room for the history of the locomotive, manufacturer, or railroad that owned or operated the locomotive. I was a bit surprised by the typos and missing verbs here and there.

Typical Brian Solomon work, wonderfully researched and collated, with beautiful photographs taken by the Author as well as by others. The Author has taken great pains to ensure that the developments in Diesel Locomotive and Electric Loco technology are easily understood even by folks not in the field. If one has even a passing interest in Railroading, it will serve as a highly enjoyable book, prior knowledge of Railroading only adds to the pleasure. Not too technical, not light on the contents either; with an excellent mixture of technical and general facts, the author has provided a visual history of the Diesel and Electric Locos in NA by GE and EMD which would do well to serve as an ornament in every Railfan's book shelf

Great book, actually two books in one put together. A detailed information on the two main brands of locomotives in US. The book is very detailed in historical pictures and has technical details on the development of the two companies with the engines used in US and information on the models made for export only. Very readable and a pleasure to pass pages just to see pictures, I really enjoyed it.

Brain Solomon does an excellent job in this updated copy of his book of not only discussing the history of locomotives in general, but also detailing the rivalry and history of GE and EMD locomotives.I found the early section discussing Electric Locomotives and how GE and Westinghouse had both begun experimenting with AC power/traction almost 100 years ago, yet it would not be until the late 90's that AC-traction really took off. This part, I found especially interesting, as it does a good job of laying a foundation for the new section of Brains book on AC-traction. (The main reason I bought the book).This is a great (condensed) read for anyone interested in the details and history of GE/EMD locomotives, without delving too deeply into the minutia of the actual components.

What a nice book! Full of photos and lot of interesting information...Highly recommendable if you are into knowing about trains, specially GE and EMD...The book, while soft cover, is very high quality, shiny paper, heavy, smooth, very well done...I am totally happy with it.

I bought this as a gift for my husband.This is a wonderful book with picture depiction of GE and EMD locomotives. It is a good history of electric and diesel electric from their beginnings to the present.

This is another fascinating book which explores qigong practices. What you'll get with this book for the most part is a lot of theory and a few exercises. The author does a good job laying out the theory of marrow breathing and other practices that can be used to achieve a deeper connection with the body, while also rejuvenating your youth. If you're not a practitioner of qigong most of this will go over your head and even if you are you may need to devote some time to taking the theory and turning it into practical practice, but this is invaluable resource to have.

Very detailed and complex information, but excellent for the serious Qi Gong student!

I am mostly impressed by the quality of this book. It has been a great source of reference and information for me as I am a novice practioner and until I found this book I was experimenting with various types of Qi Gong exercises. This book has provided me with many answers to some of the things that I have already been experiencing during my practice. How amazing is this journey of discovery and to have a great source of reference as a guide, especially when its difficult to find a reputable teacher. A definite must have for anyone interested in the internal arts, and I can't wait to read another of this author's material. My satisfaction is beyond words.

This may be the only available overview of the subject. It gives understandable explanations of the theory and process as they were expressed in the original Chinese.

There is an old saying in Chinese.True Kung Fu technique is taught in a page. Fake is in volumes.The old teachers do not like to talk a lot. They keep it brief.There are many many information collected here. Many techniques.The thickness of the book is justified.My Chinese Kung Fu manuals are thin. As thin as a pen, or a post it note. Some are thicker.The garbage is really thick. This book is NOT garbage.I have not read the entire book.I have not found the chinese writings either as mentioned by another review here.If they are there, the Chinese writings were presented to prove the source of the translation, and for those, like me, who can read Chinese, can interpret the meanings ourselves. I have 4 of his other books, also have Chinese in the last few pages, but not seen it yet in this book.The Shaolin exercises are real. I have the Chinese version from another author printed before 1930. I haven't dedicated my life to practicing them, due to distractions in life. No I don't have an ipod, a big distraction today. But there are other distractions. and 24 hours a day isn't enough for me to use.The information presented here are gathered from many sources, I believe, and organized in a way Dr. Yang and his teachers would believe as appropriate.The diagrams on the 4 seasons were very helpful for me to understand the source of some of the 6 healing sounds, and how some people remember them in the past. You didn't see them ? You didn't pay attention. And you cannot read Chinese.The information teaches: Getting up before sunrise.Never knew the reason until I read it here.Lots of information. Too much. Depending on your age, you should only practice some of the information taught here.You cannot have time to practice all unless you are still 22 or younger.It takes 10 years to succeed in ONE practice/ skill routine.You think it takes 2 days ? 2 months ?2 years would built a foundation. And most "fakes" would take this opportunity to teach and make money.Update:The Shaolin exercises needs to be modified to be perfect. About the Author

Jan Carlzon was born in Nykoping, Sweden, in 1941. After receiving his M.B.A. from the Stockholm School of Economics in 1967, he joined Vingresor, Sweden's largest tour operator, first as product manager and later as head of marketing. In 1974, when the package-tour business was in a tailspin because of the first energy crisis, he was named managing director of Vingresor at the age of 32 and soon reversed that company's economic decline. In 1978 he became managing director of Linjeflyg, Sweden's major domestic airline, and in 1981 he took command as resident and chief executive officer of SAS, the consortium of the national airlines of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. At both Linjeflyg and SAS his leadership turned heavy economic losses into healthy profits within a year. Mr. Carlzon is frequently invited to give talks and interviews worldwide on leadership and customer-oriented business strategies.

I've never read his magazine articles, so, except for the excerpts from The Right Stuff, it was all new to me. The first few articles were entertaining, in his snide way. Then it denigrated into babble, as far as I was concerned. He took a few concepts of the reviewed period, and beat it to death. I skipped through three or four stories after trying to read them. Then I was reminded of the quality work he could create, with The Right Stuff excerpt...a book I thoroughly enjoyed (far superior to the movie, in my view). Overall, I was disappointed.

Wow. First time rereading some of this in years, and it still resonates and it is still tremendous writing and thinking. Tom Wolfe is a literary sociologist, helping us see all sorts of our US culture.

Wolfe is able to encapsulate the experience of the city with hilarious precision.

I read the stories in this book in the early 70's. Radical Chic and Mau Mauing the Flack Catchers turned me away from the liberal orthodoxy my Freshman Civics teacher, not a bad person to be sure, tried to feed us. Yeager is a great story for those who haven't read the Right Stuff, and if you haven't, you will want to after you read Yeager. If you want to understand the new journalism, this is the best place to start.

A lot--perhaps too much--of Wolfe's early rambunctious style. I remembered the devastating account of the Black Panthers (original version) at the Leonard Bernstein town house, but I'd forgotten how snarky it was, even if well deserved. The Ken Kesey (sp?) drug infused bus trip I'd hadn't ever read: it was like watching a train wreck. I was glad for it to be over.

Ever heard of "purple prose"? This prose is fudge-colored.Also chock-full of some of the worst original Wolfe,"artwork", I've ever seen,(see the bookjacket for a taste). They remind me of the paintings done by "J.J.", from the t.v. show, Good Times. Complete garbage.I had to remove this book from my home.
